Vacaville firefighters receive act of kindness
VACAVILLE, Calif. (KGO) -- Here's a great story about what comes around, goes around. Firefighters in Vacaville were given a generous surprise when they raced off to a call and they knew exactly how to respond in kind.
Vacaville firefighters, shopping at Costco, ran to an emergency call and returned to find their bill had been paid. The receipt was signed "Air Force wife."
"Obviously a very nice gesture to us as firefighters over the Memorial Day weekend when we should be honoring the military and their families," Vacaville Batt. Chief Jeff Ryder said.
Instead of going back to the station, they took their unspent grocery money and helped someone else at the store.
"An older couple came up behind them they had a bouquet of flowers, it looked like for Memorial Day, they were red, white and blue, so they paid for the flowers for the couple," Ryder said.
Truth is, these Vacaville firefighters have been paying it forward long before they were treated to free groceries. The firefighters held a dinner that was already planned to honor 97-year-old World War II veteran Marvin Riehl. He is a Vacaville native who flew B-24s over China, Burma and India.
"I'm very proud. I'm extremely proud," said Riehl.
The firefighters also organize a fundraiser benefiting the veteran's hospital at Travis Air Force Base. Firefighting is just a springboard into more community service.
And they squeeze in all of their community work in between emergency calls. When ABC7 News cameras were there, the firefighters were called out again, but this time while they were giving back.
