SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- With a lucrative $3 million contract and a hot rookie season under his belt, one of the San Francisco 49ers' most promising young stars says he's walking away from football. Chris Borland is retiring at the age of 24 - and is talk of the sports world.

Borland says he's giving it all up after just one year in the NFL because he's concerned about his health and the chance of a concussion.

Fans maybe shocked but this is something Borland has been thinking about for a while.

Borland, who was a standout rookie for the 49ers, was expected to be a key defensive player next season.

He told ESPN he's worried about head injuries and the long term effects of repeated concussions. "From what I've researched and what I've experienced, I don't think it's worth the risk," he said.

Doctor Henry Huie, who specializes in brain injuries at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center explains what can happen to athletes with a history of multiple concussions.

"You're seeing changes in memory, personality, cognition and early dementia," said Dr. Duie.

Short term effects include headaches, and trouble concentrating.

"A majority of athletes are going to get better but there's a small population where these symptoms are going to be longer lasting. And there's a big effort right now to increase education and awareness what are the signs and symptoms for those who have had a concussion and what to watch out for," he added.

Borland graduated from the University of Wisconsin.

He now plans to go back to school and is considering a career in sports management.
