"We're trying to help build better people," Jackson said. "People who are thoughtful, people who are respectful, people who are courageous and our underdogs tend to rise and fly with those kinds of basics in their foundation."

"It gives me confidence because I feel like I know what I'm doing and I know how to engage in a good conversation with people," EOYDC member Mo'Ney Williams said.

Selena Wilson grew up in Oakland and earned a graduate degree from Northwestern University and returned back as the center's vice president. She told ABC7 News, "We have kids who come in here to get a meal. We have kids who come here to get help on their homework, to get a hug.... just nurturing. It's truly one of those environments we call an oasis."

NBA Hall of Fame inductee Gary Payton learned how to play basketball at the East Oakland Youth Development Center and now he's well-known for his philanthropy.

A total of 12 current and former NBA players grew up on the same court and who knows who the next one will be. Even they don't end up in the NBA many of these kids will score big in the game of life.
